XP98/99 Rim exit device
Statement printed
XP98/99 Rim exit devices are designed for single and double doors with mullion that require increased security. The “smart” latch changes shape when subjected to external forces. This design enables the exit door to withstand an external attack and remain secure. Additionally, the patented latch bolt design provides greater, longer-lasting latch bolt to strike contact which is not easily affected by the twisting motion of a weakened frame, resulting in an opening that will remain strong. Devices are certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1 and UL listed for panic exit hardware. The rim device is non-handed except when the following device options are used: SD (special dogging) or -2 (double cylinder). Covers stock hollow metal doors with 86 or 161 cutouts on single doors (may cover cutouts on pairs – consult template).

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Von Duprin 98 or 99 exit device cost?

The price on this page is assembled live from the current Von Duprin price book, so it moves when Von Duprin reprices. A bare 98 or 99 prices as a range, because the function and the finish drive the number — the resolver asks for both before it will quote a single figure. A 98 and a 99 in the same configuration come back at the same list price, so the card above prices either code.

What is the difference between the Von Duprin 98 and the 99?

The catalog gives both codes one page, headed "98/99 Rim exit device", and prints the difference as the case: "The 98 device has a smooth mechanism case and the 99 device has a grooved case." The price book carries the same distinction in the series names it prints — 98 is the Smooth Series, 99 the Grooved Series. The one other place the page separates them is the finishes row, which reads "605, 606, 612, 625, 626/626AM, 628, 710, 711 and 643e (619 and 630 available with 98 Series only)". Everything else on that page — dimensions, latch bolt, options, dogging — is printed for the pair.

What do I need to specify to order a 98 or 99 rim exit device?

Two selections firm the price: the device function or outside trim, and the finish. The trim list runs from EO (exit only) and NL (night latch) through knob, lever, turn lever and thumbpiece trims, and the specifications block notes the device "ships EO/DT/NL; Field selectable; For TP, K or L remove NL drive screw from device". Device length goes by door size — the page prints a 3' device for a 2'4" to 3' door and a 4' device for a 2'10" to 4' door.

Is the Von Duprin 98/99 handed?

The catalog prints the rim device as "non-handed except when the following device options are used: SD (special dogging), -2 (double cylinder) or SS (signal switch)". A plain 98 or 99 therefore needs no handing, and those three options are the exceptions the page itself names. The fire devices print their own list on their own page: -2, -2SI (double cylinder with security indicator) or SS.

What dogging comes on a Von Duprin 98/99?

Hex key dogging is standard — the accessories block prints it as coming standard on 98/99 rim exit devices. The dogging options table then prints CD (cylinder dogging), CD-CX (Chexit cylinder dogging), CDSI (cylinder dogging with security indicator), HDSI (hex dogging with security indicator), SD (special center case dogging), LD (less dogging), DI (dogging indicator) and CI (cylinder dogging indicator). The fire devices are the exception, and their page says so in one line: "No mechanical dogging; QEL options available."

What electrified options can I order on a 98 or 99?

The page prints ten: LX (latch bolt monitor switch), RX (request to exit), RX2 (double request to exit), ESL (emergency secure lockdown), QEL (quiet electric latch retraction), SS (signal switch), CX (Chexit delayed exit), ALK (alarm exit kit), WP-RX (waterproof request to exit, which the row notes is available to order with Outdoor Defense) and CON (Allegion Connect). They ride the part number as prefixes and suffixes on the device code, which is how the tool above assembles them.

Is the Von Duprin 98/99 UL listed, and what about fire doors?

The 98/99 page prints the devices as "UL listed for panic exit hardware" and "certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1". Fire is a separate printed page and a separate part number: the 98-F and 99-F are "certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1 and UL listed for fire exit hardware", and the catalog points at its own page 69 for the UL fire exit hardware label and door opening size information. A 98-F line resolves here as its own part number on the same price book — and note that the fire page prints no mechanical dogging.
